Additional learning support

At our school, we ensure every student is ready to learn. We support students with disability and additional learning needs so they can take part in all areas of school life. You do not need a formal diagnosis for your child to receive support in a mainstream class. Support can begin at any stage of school.

Support that fits your child's needs

Some students need extra support to feel confident and do their best at school. When appropriate, adjustments may include:

teachers and support staff working together with families (and students, if needed)
specialist support for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)

providing tailored programs to help high potential and gifted students with their advanced learning needs

small group tutoring to provide targeted literacy and numeracy support for students
regular check-ins to review and update the planned supports
changes to the classrooms; accessible classrooms, assistive technology, instructional resources
extra guidance, simpler content or different focus during lessons
adjustments may include; more time, simpler language, breaks during tasks, different ways to complete a task (e.g. oral presentations instead of written tasks).

We know when a student needs help when:

teachers notice changes in learning or behaviour
reviewing assessment results and learning progress
parents and carers raise concerns or ask for support.

Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. Where ongoing adjustments are required, a Personalised Learning and Support Plan (PLaSP) may be developed in consultation with parents and carers. A mid-year review of student goals is completed to monitor progress, and ensure ongoing support meets the students individual needs.

Learning and support interventions

Through these programs, we aim to build students' confidence, strengthen their literacy and communication skills, and provide the support they need to reach their full potential. Our learning and support interventions include:

Kindergarten

Students requiring additional support to meet curriculum expectations are assisted by our School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs) and Learning Support Teachers. Kindergarten students also have access to our speech therapy program, where SLSOs deliver regular speech practice sessions under the guidance of a qualified speech therapist who visits the school each week.

Year 1 & 2

Students identified as requiring additional support in English participate in MiniLit, an evidence-based intervention program that develops foundational reading and literacy skills.

Year 3 - 6

Students requiring further support with reading can access MacqLit, an intensive, evidence-based literacy intervention, or receive targeted instruction from a Learning Support Teacher or School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs).

English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)

Our school is committed to supporting students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. We have a dedicated English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) teacher who provides targeted support to students developing their English language skills. The EAL/D teacher also works collaboratively with classroom teachers, providing advice and strategies to ensure students are well supported and able to access the curriculum while developing confidence and proficiency in English.
