Starting Kindergarten
Starting Kindergarten marks an exciting new chapter for your child, full of opportunities to learn, grow and build new friendships. Children can start Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn 5 on or before July 31st that year. By law, all children must be in compulsory schooling by their 6th birthday.
Our school runs orientation and transition activities to help your child feel ready for Kindergarten and to support you as parents and carers.
Transition to school program - Leap Frogs
Leapfrogs is a FREE weekly transition to school program for children and their parents in the year prior to starting at Rosemeadow Public School.
The program allows children to play, learn, socialise and get ready for big school. We offer a number of sessions each week and operate during the school terms.

Before your child starts Kindergarten
Parent information night and school tour
Each year we hold a parents and carers session that provides information about attending Kindergarten at Rosemeadow Public School. This will share information on what to expect, daily schedules, uniforms, lunches and communication. Following this, we take a guided tour around the school to see our Kindergarten rooms, playgrounds and facilities.
Kindergaten Orientation
Kindergarten orientation occurs during Term 4 for students who have enrolled to attend our school the following year. Your child will be allocated a coloured group in Term 3 and will be emailed to you. Children participate in the orientation program with Kindergarten teachers and staff. Parents and carers drop their child at the classroom and are not required to stay. Children will play, sing, dance, craft, practice simple routines, explore the classrooms and make friends with fellow peers.
Enrolment interview
Before your child begins, all families meet with an executive staff member. This is a time to share any medical conditions or allergies, learning support needs and family circumstances that may affect your child’s start.

What to expect in Kindergarten
Learning and development
Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.
Daily routines
Children learn routines such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.
Best Start Assessment
Children start school with a range of experiences, skills and abilities. At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation. This helps teachers plan effective teaching and learning programs.
